Ma Claims Contra Costa Amateur in Playoff

Brian Ma of Milpitas needed two extra holes, but still claimed another big Northern California title.

Ma, who captured the 2017 San Francisco City Championship with a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole, made a par on the second playoff hole to turn back Luis Diaz of Windsor and win the Contra Costa County Amateur at Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek.

The 18-year-old Ma, who tied for third this year in the Alameda Commuters and also tied for eighth in the San Jose City Amateur Championship, posted a score of 72-69—141, 3-under-par, while Diaz finished at 70-71—141.

Spencer Hulsey of San Francisco shot 74-72—146 to tie for third with Brent Booth of Los Altos, who finished at 75-71—146, and Joshua Diaz of Discovery Bay, who wound up at 69-77—146.

Garrett Wagner, who won the tournament in 2016, carded a score of 73-75—148 to tie for sixth with Nick Frisk of Rohnert Park, who totaled 75-73—148, James Erskine of San Francisco, who finished at 73-75—148, and Taylor Hobin of Antioch, who came in at 74-74—148.

Brandon Baker of Bay Point shot 76-74—150 to tie for 10th with Justin Howell of Oakland, who wound up at 77-73—150.
