Lewis becomes first American to earn Player of the Year honors in 18 years

Stacy Lewis won four times on the LPGA Tour this year.

LPGA Tour star Stacy Lewis capped off an impressive 2012 campaign by earning enough points to secure her first-ever LPGA Rolex Player of the Year award. As the recipient, Lewis becomes the first American to win the title since Beth Daniel in 1994.

With a tour-leading four wins this year, Lewis ascended to second in the Rolex Rankings, making her the highest ranked American golfer on the LPGA tour. Lewis’ most recent victory at Japan’s Mizuno Classic on Nov. 4 was capped off with an impressive birdie streak on the final three holes to clinch the title.

She also completed the “Alabama Slam” in September, capturing both the Navistar LPGA Classic and the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic. Sandwiched in between those wins was the ShopRite Classic championship in New Jersey.

In addition to her four victories, Lewis notched 12 additional top-10 finishes, more than any player on the LPGA tour. For the year, Lewis ranked No. 1 on Tour in birdies, eagles and rounds in the 60s, and second in greens in regulation.
