Nicola Kaminski of Los Gatos captured the first Women’s Division title in the 14-year history of the Nipomo Amateur Championship, and Baron Szeto of Moraga won the Men’s Division at Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo.
Kaminski (pictured) posted a winning score of 71-72-72—215, two-over-par, while Jensen Jalufka of Austin, Texas, was second at 75-73-71—219, followed by Rori Fanning of Valencia at 76-73-77—226, Miki Lin of Fremont at 77-82-74—233 and Isabella Gunasayan of Arroyo Grande at 77-80-79—236.
“I talked to them last year after the tournament and they had told me that maybe they would try and get a women’s division going this year,” said Kaminski, who is a junior at Fresno State. “So this year they got one going and yeah, it’s great to have other girls out here and play in this tournament like this.”
Stephanie Tran of Orange was sixth at 77-81-83—241, followed by Giana Gunasayan of Arroyo Grande at 83-77-85—245, Meah Collins of Costa Mesa at 81-81-85—247 and Maya London of Arroyo Grande at 87-88-78—253.
Szeto, a junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, claimed the Men’s Division title with a score of 66-71-69—206, seven-under-par, while Zach Mate of Elk Grove finished second at 65-72-70—207, followed by Parker Mapes of Pleasanton at 71-68-70—209 and Francis Catalano of Camarillo at 70-67-74—210.
James Watney of Clovis shot 73-69-69—211 to tie for fifth with Daniel Hayes of England, who finished at 71-72-68—211, while Matthew Schafer of Long Beach was seventh at 75-65-73—213, and Joey Zambri of Camarillo totaled 75-70-69—214 to tie for eighth with Tyler Ashman of Clovis, who wound up at 73-72-69—214.
Joshua Kim of La Palma carded a score of 74-71-70—215 to tie for 10th with Aidan Oliver of Hermosa Beach, who finished at 71-71-73—215, Nathan Cossement of Belgium, who wound up at 75-67-73—215, and Natan Jetton of Diamond Springs, who came in at 73-69-73—215.
