Hunter Epsom of Long Beach captured the Agave Amateur, part of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, by four strokes over Alex Jordan of Las Vegas, the Nevada State champion, at Shadow Hills Golf Club http://www.shadowhillsgolfclub.com in Indio.
Epson, a junior at Long Beach State who formerly played at Pepperdine and finished fifth in this tournament last year, carded a score of 64-68-66—198, 5-under-par, while Jordan wound up at 65-67-70—202 and Austin Fox of Folsom was third at 69-65-69—203.
“This win means a lot,” said Epson, who overcame an early bogey in the final round with six birdies. “I’ve been close recently. Just getting it done without having been in that position for a while feels great. I’ve been working on my game a lot and it was nice to see the results coming. It will be good for the spring semester.”
Defending champion Aaron Whalen of Ephrata, Wash., shot 67-66-71—204 to tie for fourth with Alex Conley of Rancho Santa Fe, who finished at 66-71-67—204, and Clay Seeber of Newport Beach, who wound up at 69-67-68—204.
Charlie Reiter of Palm Desert was seventh at 68-67-70—205, while Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot 68-71-67—206 to tie for eighth with Ryan Grider of Lewisville, Texas, who totaled 64-74-68—206 and Trevor Lampson of Gilbert, Ariz., who came in at 70-69-67—206.
