Engellenner Beats Defending Champion Sutherland by 1 in 58th Sac County Am

Marc Engellenner of Rocklin won the 58th Sacramento County Men’s Amateur Championship by one stroke over defending champion Matthew Sutherland of Sacramento at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Sacramento.

The 44-year-old Engellenner, who also captured the Amateurgolf.com San Diego Amateur title earlier this year and also won the 2021 Tony Lema Amateur and the 100th Sacramento City Championship last year by closing with a 62, finished with a score of 68-71—139, 5-under-par, while Sutherland finished at 70-70—140.

Sutherland, a junior at Fresno State, made a strong bid to defend his title with a birdie on the final hole, but Engellenner, who bounced back from a lost ball that led to a double bogey on his first hole of the tournament, held on to win by closing with a par.

Riley Bell of Yuba City shot 71-70—141 to tie for third with Cameron Kaiser of Scottsdale, Ariz., who also wound up at 71-70—141, while Jonathan Tanihana of Sacramento was fifth at 74-68—142.

Andrew Lee of Fresno posted a score of 73-70—143 to tie for sixth with Keith Okasaki of Sacramento, who totaled 70-73—143, and Sam Harris of San Mateo, who finished at 69-74—143.

Jack Deaner of Carmichael carded a score of 73-71—144 to finish in a big tie for ninth with Jacob Custodio of Sacramento, who wound up at 72-72—144, Parker Mapes of Pleasanton, who also totaled 72-72—144, Lewis Simon of Torrance, who shot 71-73—144, Taylor Knoll of Rancho Cordova, who finished at 70-74—144, and Elvaro Estrada of Sacramento, who came in at 69-75—144.

The first two Sacramento County Amateurs were won by legendary amateur Bob E. Smith of Sacramento in 1965 and 1966, and other winners include Bill Glasson, David Sutherland, John Catlin, Steve Woods and Alex Lee.
