CS San Marcos Wins Division II West Preview

Cal State San Marcos captured the NCAA Division II Women’s West Region Preview by 10 strokes over West Texas A&M on the Legends Course at La Costa Resort and Spa www.omnihotels.com/hotels/san-diego-la-costa/golf in Carlsbad.

The Cougars, ranked No. 15 in Division II, led virtually all the way to claim their third victory of the season with a score of 298-296—594, 8-over-par, while West Texas A&M finished at 305-299—604, and Dallas Baptist totaled 304-305—609 to tie for third with Simon Fraser at 302-307—609.

“This was a great week,” said Cal State San Marcos Coach Greg Hutton, who led the Cougars to second in the Division II National Tournament last season. “We had a rough week in the Division II National Preview last week (finishing fourth) and I think our confidence took a little bit of a hit.

“All five girls stepped up and it was great to bounce back. This course can play tough when the wind is up, but we played well against some of the best teams in the country and we’re right where we want to be going into the Spring Season.”

St. Edward’s was fifth at 302-323—625, followed by Dixie State at 320-308—628 and Academy of Art in San Francisco at 311-320—631, while Point Loma finished at 322-319—641 to tie for eighth with Westminster, which wound up 320-321—641, and Western Washington was 10th at 329-313—642.

Cal State East Bay finished 13th at 324-326—650, followed by Cal State Los Angeles at 323-332—655.

Emily Leung of Simon Fraser claimed the individual title at 69-73—142, 2-under, followed by Jaime Jacob of Cal State San Marcos at 71-72—143, and her Cougar teammate Breann Horn at 73-73—146.

Holly Winter of West Texas A&M shot 75-73—148 to tie for fourth with Kiersten Bryant of St. Edward’s, who finished at 71-77—148, while Savannah Magallon of Cal State San Marcos was sixth at 77-72—149.

Anahi Servin of Academy of Art posted a score of 75-76—151 to tie for seventh with Jelina Fernando of West Texas A&M, who wound up at 81-70—151, and Sofia Ruescas of St. Mary’s of Texas, who finished at 71-80—151.

Faith DeLaGarza shot 74-78—152 to tie for 10th with her Dallas Baptist teammate Evelyn Arguelles, who came in at 73-79—152.

Alli Kim led Point Loma in a tie for 15th at 75-79—154, Drishti Karumbaya of Cal State East Bay tied for 21st at 79-77—156, and Marie Dean of Cal State Los Angeles tied for 25th at 75-82—157.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Cal State San Marcos were Claire Hogle in a tie for 21st at 77-79—156, Emily Lichty in a tie for 45th at 79-83—162, Lauren Hickam in a tie for 61st at 86-81—167, Mia Hernandez in a tie for 76th at 87-83—170 and Gilda Castellanos in 85th at 89-86—175.
