Clayton wins 91st Cal State Fair title

Trevor Clayton of Clovis made birdies on all four playoff holes to finally turn back Jooho Lee of Canada in the 91st California State Fair Men’s Amateur Championship on the MacKenzie Course at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.

Clayton, a junior at Fresno State, posted a score of 73-66-67–206, 10-under-par, coming from six strokes back after the first round, while Lee, a sophomore at Nevada Reno, finished at 70-66-70–206.

“I just wanted to make sure to make birdies and not kill myself with a three-putt,” Clayton said of the playoff holes after he chipped in for a birdie on the 18th hole to force the playoff.

” … I saw I was one shot back when I teed off on 17 (in regulation) and knew I needed to get to 10- or 11-under-par, so I wanted to finish birdie-eagle.”

Clayton lipped out his birdie putt on No. 18 before closing with his chip-in birdie.

KK Limbhasut of Cal and Thailand shot 67-68-73–208 to tie for third with Lee Gearhart of Roseville, who shot 77-68-63–288, and Sebastian Crampton of Pacific Grove, who wound up at 71-68-69–208.
