Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wins SCIAC Tourney

Edward Yu of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps captured the individual title and led the Stags to a 14-stroke victory over Redlands in the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament of the Spring at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club https://tukwetcanyon.com in Beaumont.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished with a score of 280-304—584, 8-over-par, surviving windy, rainy conditions on the second day, while Redlands wound up at 292-306—598, with California Lutheran finishing third at 300-310—610, followed by La Verne at 304-315—619.

Whittier was fifth at 317-323—640, followed by Occidental at 318-326—644, Pomona-Pitzer at 320-325—645 and Chapman at 319-337—653.

Wu, a freshman from Temple City, claimed his first college victory with a score of 66-79—145, 1-over, followed by Vincent Brunet of Whittier at 73-73—146, while Ken Kong of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 70-77—147 to tie for third with Diego Cortes of Redlands, who finished at 74-73—147.

The victory earned Wu the SCIAC Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week award, as he took his one-shot lead to the final hole, where he chipped close to the pin for a winning tap-in par.

Joshua Fambro of Redlands shot 72-76—148 to tie for fifth with his Bulldog teammate Kyle Sharp, who wound up at 70-78—148, while Austin Long of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was seventh at 73-76—149, followed by Jeffrey Perry of California Lutheran, who came in at 71-80—151.

Will Parker of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps posted a score of 80-72—152 to tie for ninth with Ryan Kyaw of California Lutheran, who totaled 80-72—152, and Nathan Stepanski of La Verne, who finished at 75-77—152.

“We’ve got four freshmen who are very competitive, so I’m very excited about this team,” said Long, a senior from El Dorado Hills. “They’re very impressive.

“I think the first tournament is always very important in the spring. I think the team came out, especially the freshmen, and performed really well. I’m happy with the results and looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Wrapping up the scoring for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were Rishi Bhat in solo 12th at 71-82—153, and Vikram Chatterjee in a tie for 17th at 75-81—156.

Sam Sawyers led Pomona-Pitzer in a tie for 13th at 77-78—155, while Avery Keating of Chapman tied for 25th at 78-81—159, and Jack Moeller of Occidental shot 79-83—162 to finish in a tie for 30th that including his Tiger teammate Dav Mahendra, who finished at 79-83—162.
