Host Chico State claimed the team title and Elis Svard of Cal State Monterey Bay took home the individual crown in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Championship on the Gold Course at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.
The Wildcats defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-2, in the medal/match play final.
Serge Kiriluk, a junior from Sonora, shot 3-over-par 75 to give Chico State the winning point with a one-stroke victory over Kirabo Reed of CSUMB.
“It was a battle out there,” Kiriluk said. “It was fun. I haven’t had a match like that in college. It was awesome. After about nine holes, we both could tell. We both kind of knew that it was ‘ride or die’ on us, on our match.”
Kelley Sullivan of Chico State won by seven strokes over Callum Carlstrom and Christopher Colla of the Wildcats also prevailed by seven over Maximillian Grieb, while league champion Svard gave the Otters a point by beating Colby Dean by 12, while Edward Hackett won by five over Josh McCollum.
In the semifinals, Chico State downed Cal State San Bernardino, 4-0-1, and Cal State Monterey Bay got past Sonoma State, 3-2.
Chico State earned the No. 1 seeding for match play by winning the stroke-play portion of the tournament with a score of 302-288-288—878, 14-over-par, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay at 296-293-291—880, while Sonoma State totaled 308-289-295—892 to tie for third with Cal State San Bernardino, which wound up at 303-293-296—892.
Cal State Dominguez Hills posted a score of 302-295-297—894 to tie for fifth with Cal State San Marcos, which finished up at 294-304-296—894, while Cal State East Bay was seventh at 299-299-298—896, followed by Stanislaus State at 301-298-299—898, and UC San Diego at 296-311-297—904.
Svard, a sophomore from Sweden, became the sixth Otter to claim the individual title in the last 10 years with a score of 75-69-66—210, 6-under, followed by Sullivan at 73-70-71—214, Spencer Clapp of Sonoma State at 75-69-73—217 and Hayden Hui of UC San Diego at 74-77-67—218, while Chris Tuulik of Cal State San Marcos shot 70-74-75—219 to tie for fifth with Tristan Stone of Cal State San Bernardino, who wound up at 71-73-75—219.
Hackett carded a score of 73-73-74—220 to tie for seventh with Calla, who finished at 76-72-72—220, while Cody Hall of Cal State San Bernardino totaled 78-69-74—221 to tie for ninth with Andrew Banuelos of Cal State Dominguez Hills, who wound up at 76-71-74—221, Raynard Belmonte, also of Cal State Dominguez Hills, who posted a score of 76-73-72—221, and Ian Hofmann of Sonoma State, who came in at 72-74-75—221.
Tim Sauer led Stanislaus State in a tie for 13th at 74-73-75—222, and Declan Illingsworth of Cal State East Bay tied for 19th at 73-77-74—224.
