Blake Brothers of San Juan Capistrano defeated Patrick Wu of Taiwan on the 19th hole to capture the 15th Los Angeles City Match Play Championship at Wilson Golf Course golf.lacity.org/course_wilson in Griffith Park.
In the semifinals, Brothers defeated Damon Krause of Los Angeles, the reigning Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur champion, 3 and 2, while Wu, a junior at Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., got past Alec Arnonson of Simi Valley, 1 up.
Brothers, a sophomore at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, who finished fifth in the Los Angeles City Men’s Championship earlier this year, had several other tough matches on his way to the final.
First, Brothers beat Jack Sullivan of Santa Ana on the final hole, 1 up, then he needed 20 holes to dispose of Tongun Lako Losarah of Upland, and also went the distance to get past Cory Segal of Valencia, a former SCGA Mid-Amateur champion, 1 up, in the quarterfinals.
Segal had ousted defending champion Tim Hogarth of Northridge, the defending champion who also won the L.A. City Match Play title in 2013, on the 19th hole in the round of 16.
