Three golfers from California colleges reached the quarterfinals of the 116th United States Amateur Championship on the South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., on Thursday.
In the quarterfinals, Jonah Texeira of Porter Ranch, a junior at USC, defeated Kyler Dunkle of Denver, 6 and 5, Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills, a sophomore at Pepperdine, beat Joaquin Niemann of Chile, 3 and 1, and David Boote (pictured) of Wales, a recent graduate of Stanford, downed Collin Morikawa of La Canada, a sophomore at Cal, 2 and 1.
KK Limbhasut of Loma Linda and Cal lost to Nick Carlson of Hamilton, Mich., on the 19th hole, and Bryan Baumgarten of Granite Bay, who will be a freshman at Illinois, fell to Brad Dalke of Norman, Okla., also on the 19th hole.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, Theegala will play Curtis Luck of Australia, Texeira will take on Luis Gagne of Orlando, Fla., and Boote will meet Dalke.
