Aztecs’ Koeneke Wins UCSD Invitational

Liam Koeneke of San Diego State captured the individual title in the UC San Diego Invitational with a birdie on the third playoff hole to turn back Colten Cordingley of Utah State on the Champions Course at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

Koeneke, an Aztec freshman from Del Mar who played at Torrey Pines High, claimed his first college title with a score of 70-73-75—218, 2-over par, while Cordingley finished at 73-71-74—218.

Amadeo Figus of San Diego State posted a score of 74-73-73—220 to tie for third with Jake Vincent of Southern Utah, who shot 74-71-75—220, and Brandon Bueno of UC Santa Barbara, who wound up at 72-73-75—220.

Ryan Vaughan of UC San Diego shot 70-75-77—222 to tie for sixth with Andy Hess of Utah State, who totaled 72-73-77—222, while Anfield Srichun of Southern Utah was eighth at 74-74-75—223.

Nate Irwin of UC Irvine finished at 77-73-74—224 to tie for ninth with Tomas Helgo of Cal State Northridge, who wound up at 76-74-74—224, Alex Hanz of UC San Diego, who shot 72-74-78—224, and Darien Zhao of UC Irvine, who came in at 73-71-80—224.

Utah State claimed the individual title with a score of 299-294-300—893, 29-over, followed by Southern Utah at 306-294-297—897, while UC Santa Barbara totaled 308-292-304—904 to tie for third with UC Irvine, which finished at 310-295-299—904.

Cal State Northridge was fifth at 313-301-307—921, followed by UC San Diego at 320-298-307—925.

San Diego State had only four players in the event and did not enter the team competition, but would have won it by two strokes.
