Armour beats Janzen in playoff

Tommy Armour III holed a four-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat Lee Janzen and win the 43rd Callaway Pebble Beach Invitational, claiming the title for the for the third time on the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The 55-year-old Armour was two strokes behind co-leader Janzen at the start of the final round, but closed with a 5-under-par 67 to catch the two-time U.S. Open champion, who finished with a 69.

Armour sank a 17-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation after Janzen made a 30-foot birdie putt from the front fringe. Armour’s birdie was especially remarkable because he drove onto the beach, but got back into position to make birdie on the famed par-5 hole by hitting a 7-iron onto the fairway.

“When I saw the ball on the beach I knew there was no other way,” said Armour, who won the tournament in 2007 and 2008. “I’ve had that shot before, but I’ve never made it.”

Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento and Fresno State was alone in third after a 67.
