Abegail Arevalo gave San Jose State its second individual victory in as many tournaments of the new season and the Spartans finished second to Illinois in the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate at Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course (http://www.golfcda.com) in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Arevalo, a senior from the Philippines whose first college victory came in the MountainView Collegiate late last season, rallied from five strokes down in the final round, carding birdies on the 14th, 15th and 17th holes to beat Katherine Zhu of California and Crystal Wang of Illinois by one stroke.
“I had no idea until I made my final putt on 18 that I was winning,” said Arevalo, who earlier this month won the California Women’s State Fair Championship by seven strokes. “My coaches didn’t tell me.
“I came into the day focused on the process and plan for the day and helping my teammates. I wasn’t thinking about winning. This win feels great and gives me a lot of confidence for my senior year.”
