Top-ranked Jordan Spieth closed with a 5-under-par 66 but fell one stroke short of winner Song Young-han in the SMBC Singapore Open in a Monday finish on the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.
Spieth returned after rain and darkness halted play the night before to sink a five-foot birdie putt that he hoped would get him into a playoff with Song.
“I went to the putting green to practice early in the morning as I knew I had to get that birdie to force a playoff,” said Spieth, who started the year by winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and tying for fifth in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
“It was nerve-racking and I was happy I managed to stroke the ball well and it went in. I made some poor decisions in the middle two rounds as I was trying to do a little too much. But overall, it has been a great experience and I had a really good time here.”
Song came back to make a 12-foot par putt on the 16th hole, one of several clutch par saves he made in the final round, finishing off his 70 with seven straight pars.
“That one night felt like a week,” Song said. “It was crazy. I couldn’t sleep and I was constantly thinking about putting throughout the night. I read the line well on 16 and just maintained my composure on 17 and 18.
“I knew the title was for me to lose as long as I don’t make any silly mistakes. Looking back, I think the suspension helped as the winds were starting to blow hard yesterday and that might have made a difference.”
Liang Wen-chong of China was another shot back in third after a 69.
