Stanford’s Boote wins Welsh Amateur

David Boote, a senior at Stanford, claimed the Welsh Amateur Championship with a 4-and-3 victory over 16-year-old Elis Lewis in the scheduled 36-hole final at Prestatyn Golf Club in Prestatyn, Denbigshire, Wales.

Boote, a native of Wales who lives in Surrey, England, took a 2-up lead over Lewis, of Ynyslas, Wales, in the morning round and finished things off on the 15th hole in the afternoon.

“It was special to get this win; it is the biggest of my career so far,” said Boote, 21, who won the 2011 Welsh National Junior Championship and led Wales to the 2014 European Team Championship. “We both played well in the final, but I improved a bit in the afternoon and that was key.

“I felt under a bit of pressure going into the final. Elis had done so well to get there, but you just have to treat it like any other match. I felt if I could play my own game then I had a chance.”

Boote made a birdie on the 19th hole of the semifinals to turn back Thomas Williams of Wrexham, Wales, while Lewis beat Theo Baker of Celtic Manor, 3 and 2.
