Amateur Chun An Yu of Taiwan led San Francisco Sectional Qualifying at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City and the Ocean Course at the Olympic Club, and will play in the 118th United States Open next week at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
Yu, who recently finished his freshman year at Arizona State and won the Bandon Dunes Championship and the National Invitational Tournament for the Sun Devils, posted a score of 65-70—135, 8-under-par.
The other four spots available in San Francisco went to Shintaro Ban of San Jose and UNLV, who finished second at 67-69—136, while Franklin Huang of Poway and Stanford shot 69-68—137 to tie for third with Sung Joon Park of Irvine, who finished at 67-70—137, and Rhett Rasmussen of Draper, Utah, and BYU, who wound up at 66-71—137.
Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, qualified by tying for third at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., with a score of 70-66—136, and Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and University Place, Wash., made it by shooting 73-65—137 to finish in a tie for fifth that included Patrick Rodgers of Stanford and Avon, Ind., who shot 73-64—137 at Brookside Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
Also at Brookside, Adam Scott of Australia qualified for his 68th consecutive major by tying for 10th at 66-72—138.
David Gazzolo of Riverside qualified by tying for fourth with a score of 69-68—138 at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio.
Michael Block of Mission Viejo, the 2017 Southern California PGA champion, made it by shooting 69-68—137 to tie for third at Portland Golf Club in Portland, Ore.
Aaron Wise of Lake Elsinore, the 2016 NCAA champion at Oregon, reached the U.S. Open by tying for ninth at Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis, Tenn., at 66-70—136.
