World No. 1 Zhang, Top-Ranked Stanford Sweep Again in Nanea Pac-12 Preview

Rose Zhang and Stanford simply affirmed that they are the best in women’s college golf.

Zhang, the top-ranked amateur in the world from Irvine, won the individual title by three strokes and led the No. 1 Cardinal to a 10-stroke victory over Oregon in the Nanea Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club in Kailua, Kona, Hawaii.

Coach Anne Walker’s Cardinal, the defending NCAA champion, posted a score of 279-291-288—858, 18-under-par, while Oregon was second at 288-291-289—868, followed by Arizona at 280-300-289—869, Arizona State at 275-311-285—871, and UCLA at 285-305-288—878.

Stanford closed out the Fall season with four victories, also having won the Carmel Cup, the Stephens Cup and the Stanford Intercollegiate.

USC was sixth at 296-297-291—884, followed by California at 283-304-298—885, Oregon State at 291-307-301—899, Washington State at 305-305-295—905 and Washington at 307-303-300—910.

Colorado was 11th at 298-309-308—915, followed by Hawaii at 302-312-316—930.

Zhang, also No. 1 in the NCAA individual rankings as a sophomore, claimed her seventh college victory and third this season with a score of 67-70-71—208, 11-under-par, while Ashleigh Park of Oregon was second at 70-69-72—211, followed by Gile Bite Starkute of Arizona at 70-70-72—212.

Caroline Canales of UCLA shot 70-73-70—213 to tie for fourth with Ashley Menne of Arizona State, who finished at 66-77-70—213, while Zoe Campos of UCLA wound up sixth at 69-71-74—214.

Amari Avery of USC carded a score of 73-75-67—215 to tie for seventh with Briana Chacon of Oregon, who finished at 75-70-70—215, and Megha Ganne of Stanford, who came in at 71-72-72—215, while Brooke Seay of Stanford was 10th at 69-74-73—216.

Jieming Yang led Cal in a tie for 11th at 70-75-74—219.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Stanford were Sadie Englemann in a tie for 11th at 72-75-72—219, and Carolina Sturdza, in a tie for 51st at 77-81-76—234.

Stanford will begin the Spring Season, as it attempts to defend its NCAA Championship, in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates on Feb. 13.
