Wiebe Takes SCPGA Assistant Title

Gunner Wiebe of Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles claimed a one-stroke victory over three other golfers in the 2019 National Car Rental Southern California Assistant PGA Professional Championship at Glendora Country Club http://www.glendoracountryclub.com.

Wiebe posted a score of 71-70—141, 3-under-par, while Michael Mendoza of Pauma Valley Country Club shot 72-70—142 to tie for second with Lyon Lazare of Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita, who finished at 73-69—142, and Bobby Nickell of Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, who wound up at 74-68—142.

“The course played really tough in the afternoon when the wind got up,” Wiebe said. “I kind of had to reset a little, and then just grinded all day.”

Wiebe, Mendoza, Lazare and Nickell all qualified for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship to be held November 14-17 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Al Geiberger of the Palms Golf Club in La Quinta totaled 72-71—143 to tie for fifth with Nick Babel of Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, who finished at 73-70—143, while Brian Mahoney of PGA West in La Quinta was seventh at 72-72—144.

Hamish Gardner of Los Angeles Country Club shot 76-69—145 to tie for eighth with.

Cory Chavez of Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights, who wound up at 73-72—145, Jerry Crowell of Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, who finished at 71-74—145, and Cavin McCall of Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul, who also came in at 71-74—145.

Geiberger, Badel, Mahoney and Gardner earned alternate spots for the national tournament.
