Wie earns first Annika Major Award

Michelle Wie finished her major championship season on the sidelines because of a finger injury, but still earned the inaugural Rolex Annika Major Award for the best overall performance in the Grand Slam events this season.

Wie withdrew from the Evian Championship, the fifth and final LPGA Tour major of the season, after 13 holes of the first round because of a problem with the index finger in her right hand, but received he award from Annika Sorenstam anyway.

“It’s pretty crazy,” the Stanford graduate told said in accepting the award. “I entered this week just grateful I had a chance. I really am very surprised, too, very happy.”

In addition to pulling out of the Evian, Wie was unable to play the Wegmans LPGA Championship and  missed the cut in the Ricoh Women’s British Open, but claimed the award on the strength of her victory in the U.S. Women’s Open, her first major title, and a runner-up finish in the Kraft Nabisco.

A major championship victory was worth 60 points and Wie finished with 84 points, 10 more than Inbee Park of South Korea. The winner had to win a major to qualify.
