Shawn White and Costa Tzikas, both of Lincoln, won the Northern California Two-Person Scramble by six strokes over Greg Gaunt of Sacramento and David Burroughs of El Dorado Hills at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
White (pictured, right) and Tzikas (left) posted a score of 59-61—120, 22-under par, with Gant and Burroughs finishing second at 62-64—128, followed by Marc Engellener of Rocklin and Russell Brackett of Nevada City wound up at 64-63—127, who tied for third with Mike Leong of Pacifica and Trent Tessler of Scott’s Valley, who also totaled 64-63—127.
It was the first Northern California Golf Association title for both Tzikas and White.
“It was an incredible win, but we could not have closed it out playing left-handed,” said Tzikas, who teamed with White for 21 birdies in 36 holes. “Our special thanks to the official who gave me proper instruction on where to take my drop on the fourth hole. It was the momentum we needed to push through the final round.”
Jason Lo of Roseville and Wes Hollabaugh, also of Roseville, posted a score of 66-62—128 to tie for fifth with Chase Newman of Bernardsville, N.J., and John Goldstein of San Francisco, who finished at 62-66—128, while Sherman of Templeton and Paul Rice of Redlands were seventh at 63-66—129.
Esteban Hernandez of Friant and Bob Hernandez of Clovis totaled 67-63—130 to tie for eighth with Jack Palmer of Salinas and Lewis of Yorba Linda, who wound up at 66-64—130, while Daniel Ho of Spring Valley and Michael Leeder of San Francisco shot 66-67—133 to tie for 10th with Micah Copeland of Fremont and George Veh of Mill Valley, who finished at 67-66—133, and Steve Challice Walnut Creek and Scott Garfield of Petaluma, who also came in at 67-66—133.
Phil Naylor of San Francisco and Daniel Stephenson of South San Francisco closed with a clutch eagle on the par-5 18th hole and finished at 63-64—127 to win the Golden Gate Division by two strokes over Rich Estep of Rocklin and Michael Lincoln of Lincoln, who shot 66-62—128, and Mark Bagnola of Danville and Wade Barnett of San Jose, who finished at 64-64—128.
Mike McCarthy of Tulare and Scott Hodges of Walnut Creek won the Yosemite Division with a score of 62-61—123, claiming a two stroke victory over the father-son team of Ryan and David Griffiths of Napa, who wound up at 61-64—125, while Dan Robinson of Sacramento and Nick Watts of Eugene, Ore., and San Jose State finished third at 66-60—126.
