Matthew Wolff of Agoura Hills and Spencer Soosman of Westlake Village each won twice on the first day of match play in the American Junior Golf Association’s Polo Golf Junior Classic at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The fourth-seeded Wolff (pictured), a sophomore at Westlake High, defeated Doc Redman of Raleigh, N.C., 2 and 1, before slipping past Cooper Dorsey of Austin, Texas, 1 up.
Spencer Soosman, Wolff’s junior teammate at Westlake who was seeded 30th, upset third-seeded Austin Connelly of Austin, Texas, 6 and 5, then knocked off Wilson Furr of Jackson, Miss., 2 and 1.
Jack Solomon of Dublin, seeded 24th, upset ninth-seeded Kristoffer Reitan of Norway before losing to Jack Comstock of Jacksonville, Fla., 5 and 3.
Ashwin Arasu of San Diego, seeded 27th, took out No. 6 Won Jun Lee of South Korea, but fell to Sam Burns of Shreveport, La., 5 and 4.
In the Girls Division, ninth-seeded Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar defeated Courtney Dow of Frisco, Texas, 3 and 2, and downed eighth-seeded Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City, Hawaii, 1 up.
Alyaa Abdulghany of Newport Beach, seeded No. 30, upset third-seeded Jaravee Boonchant of Thailand, 3 and 1, and also beat Samantha Wagner of Windermere, Fla., 3 and 2.
Muni Hee of Rancho Santa Fe, seeded 22nd, beat 11th-seeded Rachel Dai of Milton, Ga., 1 up, but lost to No. 6 Ana Paula Valdes of Mexico, 2 and 1.
Seventh-seeded Angel Yin of Arcadia downed Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C., 1 up, but fell to Mary Juniga of Wellington, Fla., on the 20th hole.
