Waves Take Title in Hawaii With Late Birdies

Joshua McCarthy, RJ Manke and Joe Highsmith sank birdie putts on the last hole to give Pepperdine its second victory of the season by two strokes over Missouri in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at Princeville Makai Golf Course https://makaigolf.com/ in Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii.

The Waves posted a winning score of 273-284-279—836, 28-under-par, while Missouri finished at 286-275-277—838, followed by Louisville at 286-281-272—839, while Cal State Fullerton finished at 282-286-277—845 to tie for fourth with Alabama Birmingham, which wound up at 278-288-279—845.

“I’m proud of how our guys competed this week,” Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. “It was very tight down the stretch and it was great to see Joe, RJ and Josh clutch up. Everyone contributed, which kept us in it. It’s a great team win.”

Loyola Marymount totaled 291-276-281—848 to tie for sixth with Sam Houston State, which wound up a 283-281-284—848, and Mississippi was eighth at 276-295-278—849, followed by Louisiana at 285-290-278—853 and Purdue at 281-293-281—855.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo finished 13th at 291-286-287—864 and University of San Diego was 17th at 295-291-286—872.

Blake Elliott of McNeese State took the individual title with a score of 68-68-67—198, 18-under, followed by John Murphy of Louisville at 71-65-65—201, McCarthy of Pepperdine at 66-67-70—203, Beau Briggs of Mississippi at 66-73-66—205 and Jackson Suber of Mississippi at 70-70-66—206.

Matthias Schmid of Louisville totaled 68-70-69—207 to tie for sixth with Austen Christiansen of Sam Houston State, who wound up at 70-70-67—207, Jamie Stewart of Missouri, who finished at 70-70-67—207 and Rory Franssen of Missouri, whom came in at 71-68-68—207.

Raymond Navis of Loyola Marymount carded a score of 72-70-66—208 to tie for 10th with George Gardner of San Diego, who finished at 67-72-69—208, Justin Arcano of Hawaii, who wound up at 73-69-66—208, and John Hayden of Alabama Birmingham, who wound up at 69-71-68—208.

Matt Wilson led Cal State Fullerton in 22nd at 70-76-65—211, Thomas Lehman of Cal Poly tied for 31st at 73-69-71—213.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Pepperdine were Clay Feagler in a tie for 22nd at 68-72-71—211, while Austin Murphy shot 71-70-73—214 to finish in a tie for 35th that included teammate Highsmith, who finished at 69-77-68—214, and Manke, who was 42nd at 70-75-70—215.
