Shintaro Ban of UNLV, a senior from San Jose, sank a five-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that lifted him into a tie with Yannick Paul of Colorado for medalist honors in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on the Karsten Golf Course at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
Ban, who also made an eagle on the 14th hole in earning his third victory this season and fourth of his career, carded a score of 69-64-69—202, 11-under-par, while Paul finished at 67-66-69—202.
Quade Cummins of Oklahoma was third at 67-67-70—204, followed by Blake Wagoner of Arizona State at 69-68-68—205 and David Laskin of Arizona at 64-70-72—206, while Garrett May of Baylor shot 72-66-69—207 to tie for sixth with Sam Stevens of Oklahoma State, which finished at 71-69- 67—207.
Chun An Yu of Arizona State posted a score of 66-73-69—208 to tie for eighth with George Cunningham of Arizona, who totaled 73-68-67—208, Braden Bailey of Baylor, who finished at 66-71-71—208, and Jack Trent of UNLV, who came in at 73-72-63—208.
David Kim led UC Irvine in a tie for 58th at 73-76-74—223.
Host Arizona State claimed the team title with a score of 274-276-280—830, 22-under, followed by UNLV at 276-274-281—831, Oklahoma at 282-271- 280—833 and top-ranked Oklahoma State, which had won its previous seven tournaments, at 283-282-270—835.
Arizona was fifth at 278-284-276—838, followed by Baylor at 276-281-282— 839, Colorado State at 277-290-288—855, Utah at 290-282-284—856 and Colorado at 287-291-285—863, while Oregon State totaled 290-281-297— 868 to tie for 10th with Denver, which wound up at 292-284-292—868.
