UCLA, DeChambeau win at Erin Hills

Bryson DeChambeau, an SMU junior from Clovis, claimed the second victory of his college career and UCLA took home the team title in the Erin Hills Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Club in Hartford, Wis.

DeChambeau, a graduate of Clovis East High who recently helped the United States win the World Amateur Team Championship, posted a score of 72-71-69–212, playing the final round in a bogey-free 3-under-par.

“It’s great to come back from last year’s letdown and win at one of my favorite places,” said DeChambeau, who led for much of the final round a year ago before finishing third. “Even though we didn’t get the (team) win, I’m still proud of everyone on the team. They all fought hard and did their best. I’m not sure that any other team in the country could have played as well as UCLA did today, so hats off to them.”

Manav Shav of UCLA shot 72-72-69–213 and tied for second with his Bruin teammate, Lorens Chan, who finished at 70-74-69–213.

Rounding out the Bruins’ lineup, Jonathan Garrick tied for seventh at 76-76-66–218, Jake Knapp tied for 14th at 79-72-70–221, Preston Valder tied for 21st at 76-73-74–223 and Corey Shaun tied for 42nd at 78-79-73–230.

UCLA posted a score of 294-291-274–859, with SMU a distant second at 301-287-283–871, followed by Marquette at 299-295-284–878, Northwestern at 302-294-284–880 and South Florida at 307-294-281–882.

The Bruins claimed their second victory in as many outings this season and the 21st of Coach Derek Freeman’s eight-year career at UCLA.
