Devon Bling of UCLA beat Ryan Bisharat of San Diego by one stroke for the individual title and led the Bruins to a six-shot victory over Nevada in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.
The Bruins claimed their first victory of the season with a score of 287-288-293—868, 4-over-par, while Nevada was second at 286-298-290—874, followed by Washington at 297-295- 283—875, San Diego at 283-305-288—876 and Colorado State at 289-300-288—877.
“We are super excited,” UCLA Coach Derek Freeman said. “It was a real challenge and a great test. I think the guys worked really hard and came down here with a great attitude.
“We have back-to-back tournaments during spring break, so we’ve got to get ready for those. We are happy about (the win), and we will celebrate it today, but tomorrow we’ve got to start working towards our next event.”
Kansas was sixth at 289-307-285—881, followed by Brigham Young at 288-306-288—882, while USC finished at 285-303-295—883 to tie for eighth with New Mexico, which wound up at 289-296-298—883, and Colorado was 10th at 287-298-299—884.
UC Davis was 11th at 294-299-295—888, followed by San Diego State at 288-306-296—890, while St. Mary’s was 14th at 300-302-296—898, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was 16th at 298-316-296—910, followed by San Jose State 312-297-306—915.
Bling, a senior from Ridgecrest, claimed his third career title with a score of 68-69-75—212, 4-under, while Bisharat finished at 68-72-73—213.
“We are always trying to win as a team and as an individual, too, and to be able to do both of those things this week was really special,” Bling said. “I played really well and was able to stay patient all week long.
“There (are) certain parts of my game that I still need to work on and that I think I can always improve. I am just going to get back into practice and work on my golf game and get it sharper for the events coming up.”
Cole Ponich of Brigham Young shot 73-72-69—214, to tie for third with Jan Schneider of Washington, who finished at 70-73-71—214, and Jackson Solem of Denver, who wound up at 71-69-74—214.
William Duquette of Kansas totaled 70-75-70—215 to tie for sixth with Charlie Reiter of San Diego, who shot at 71-76-68—215, while Luke Kluver of Kansas finished at 71-75-70—216 to tie for eighth with Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary’s, who wound up at 70-74-72—216, and Tyler Severin of Wyoming, who came in at 74-70-72—216.
Kaito Onishi led USC in solo 16th at 71-74-73—218, Youssef Guezzale of San Diego State tied for 17th at 73-77-69—219, Lucas Carper of UC Davis tied for 23rd at 72-77-72—221, Sean Yu of San Jose State tied for 45th at 74-72- 78—224, and Austin Liu of Cal Poly SLO tied for 49th at 76-78-71—225.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion UCLA were Bryan Wiyang Teoh at 70-74- 75—219 in a tie for 17th that included his Bruins teammate Eddy Lai, who finished at 75-68-76—219, Mason Greene in a tie for 23rd at 74-77-70—221, and Dylan Vizanko in a tie for 108th at 83-86-73—242.
