U.S. Keeps Junior Ryder Cup, 12 1/2 to 11 1/2

Californians posted a 3-0-1 record in singles and helped the United States retain the Junior Ryder Cup with a 12½-11½ victory over Europe at Golf Disneyland (www.disneylandparis.com/en-us/recreation/golf-disneyland) in Magny-le-Hongre, France.

The Americans lead the series, 7-3-1, with six straight victories after Europe had a 3-0-1 run.

“I feel so proud of this group of people,” said U.S. Captain Allen Wronowski, past president of the PGA of America. “We buckled down and won on a tough final day. Europe had no stop, they’re great players and it went down to every match and it was very exciting. I couldn’t be prouder of every one of these players.

“The opportunity to not only experience a great country, different foods, and a different culture has been priceless. These are memories that these players will take with them for the rest of their lives.”

Rachel Heck of Memphis, Tenn., halved her match against Annabell Fuller of England to give the U.S. the half point it needed to keep the Junior Ryder Cup.

Ricky Castillo of Yorba Linda, who went 2-0-1 in the two-day competition, defeated Eduard Rosaud Sabate of Spain, 3 and 1; Luci Li of Redwood Shores beat Amanda Linner of Sweden, 4 and 3, to go 2-1; Yealimi Noh of Concord downed Emma Spitz of Austria, 3 and 2, to finish 1-1-l, and Rose Zhang of Irvine halved her match with Ingrid Lindblad of Sweden to wind up 0-1-2.

In the other matches, Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark slipped past William Moll of Houston, 1 up; his identical twin Nicolai Hojgaard beat Canon Claycomb of Bowling Green, Ky., 4 and 2; Emilie Alba Paltrinieri of Italy defeated Erica Shepherd of Greenwood, Ind., 2 up; Alessia Nobilio of Italy downed Alexa Pano of Fort Worth, Texas, 2 and 1; Robin “Tiger” Williams of England edged Cole Ponich of Farmington, Utah, 2 and 1, and Connor Gough of England got past Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, N.C., 1 up.

The Euros claimed a 7-5 edge in singles, but the U.S. had built a 7½-4½ lead in fourball and foursomes on the first day.
