Cameron Tringale of Laguna Nigel shot 3-under-par 68 and was tied for the lead with defending champion Adam Scott after two rounds of the Barclays, the opener of the PGA Tour playoffs, at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
The 26-year-old Tringale, who tied for 33rd in the PGA Championship but disqualified himself about a week later because of a possible rules violation, bounced back from a bogey-par-double bogey start with four birdies in six holes and six in all in round two.
“(I) kind of got behind the 8‑ball early and just kind of kept my head up and kept playing,” said Tringale, who opened with a 66. “I knew I was swinging well and if I gave myself some chances, I could make birdies. That’s pretty much what I did. ”
Scott, who won the tournament last year at Liberty National, followed an opening 69 with a 65 that included four consecutive birdies through the eighth hole.
Kevin Chappell of Fresno and UCLA recorded a 67 and was one stroke behind in a tie for third with Jim Furyk and Brendan Todd, who both came in at 69.
Kevin Na of Diamond Bar carded a 66 and was two shots back in a six-way tie for sixth.
