Third-Ranked UCLA, Campos Sweep Titles in the Pac-12 Women’s Preview

Third-ranked UCLA claimed its fourth victory of the 2023-24 season by four strokes over second-ranked Stanford, and Zoe Campos won the individual title for the Bruins in the Pac-12 Women’s Preview at Nanea Golf Club in Kailua Kona, Hawaii.

The Bruins, who trailed by eight strokes after the first round, posted a winning score of 289-288-288—865, 11-under-par, to claim the title for the third time after also winning in 2015 and 2016.

“We’re really happy about pulling out the win in Hawaii against such a strong field,” UCLA Coach Alicia Um Holmes said. “Any time we play against conference teams, it’s good competition.

“After the first round, when we found ourselves behind, it didn’t really set anything into panic. We just knew that we could play well out here and play steady. And then if we did that, good things would happen.”

Stanford finished second at 288-289-292—869, while USC totaled 282-296-301—879 to tie for third with Arizona, which finished at 282-303-291—876, and Washington was fifth at 287-296-298—881.

San Jose State was sixth at 290-300-295—885, followed by Oregon State at 294-298-304—896, Colorado at 292-308-304—904, Cal at 302-300-308—910, and San Diego State at 302-305-304—911.

Campos, a junior from Valencia, claimed her third college victory with a score of 71-70-70—211, eight-under-par, while Amari Avery of USC posted a score of 70-72-70—212 to tie for second with Paula Martin of Stanford at 69-70-73—212, while Kate Villegas of UCLA shot 73-73-69–215 to tie for fourth with Sadie Englemann of Stanford, who finished at 69-71-75—215.

“All the hard work is paying off,” said Campos, who won the 2023 Silverado Showdown and the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in 2023. “I know it’s been a couple months since I’ve had indy (individual) wins, so it’s nice to be back in the winner’s circle again.”

Lucia Lopez Ortega of San Jose State carded a score of 69-76-71—216 to tie for sixth with Carolina Melgrati of Arizona, who shot 69-80-67—216, and Gile Bite Starkute, her Arizona teammate, who wound up at 68-73-75—216.
