Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine coasted to a 16-stroke victory on a record-setting day for the host Waves in the Waves Challenge at Saticoy Country Club in Somis.
Pepperdine claimed its first victory since the Southwestern Invitational last spring with a score of 297-297-283—877, 13-over-par, winning by a school record 37 strokes over UC Santa Barbara, which finished at 322-300-292—914.
The Waves’ previous record for margin of victory was 33 strokes at the 2002 West Coast Conference Championships, when Coach Michael Beard was a member of that team.
Boise State was third at 314-308-293—915, followed by Grand Canyon at 317-305-299—921 and Long Beach State at 310-307-308—925.
UC Irvine was sixth at 320-302-309—931, followed by South Dakota at 322-308-305—935, Fresno State at 321-317-299—937, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 317-324-297—938 and Texas Rio Grande Valley at 322-316-306—944.
UC Riverside was 11th at 324-326-302—952, followed by Cal State Fullerton at 331-324-302—957, Cal State Northridge at 325-337-308—970, Seattle at 330-329-315—974, and Sacramento State at 344-335-333—1012.
Theegala, a junior from Chino Hills who was an All-American and West Coast Conference Player of the Year last season, shot 70-68-67—205, 11-under. His 16-shot
victory bested the school-record of nine strokes set by Dean Kobane at the 1989 WCC Championships.
It was the second victory of Theegala’s career at Pepperdine, following the 2017 Southwestern Invitational.
Joshua McCarthy of Pepperdine was second at 73-79-69—221, followed by Brian Humphreys of Boise State at 78-72-72—222, while Felix Mory of Cal State Northridge totaled 75-78-70—223 to tie for fourth with Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara, who finished at 78-73-72—223.
Vinnie Murphy of Grand Canyon shot 76-75-73—224 to tie for sixth with Clay Feagler of Pepperdine, who wound up at 78-71-75—224, while Andres Gonzalez of Long Beach State totaled 75-77-73—225 to tie for eighth with Nick Swanson of UC Santa Barbara, who came in at 81-76-68—225.
Alex Lee of Fresno State carded a score of 79-72-75—226 to tie for 10th with Mark Cobey of Cal State Fullerton, who finished at 76-79-71—226.
