Comedian Bill Murray almost was unable to play in the $100,000 3M Celebrity Challenge on Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links www.pebblebeach.com, but not only did he make it, but his team came out ahead of actor Clint Eastwood’s team in the sixth annual charity event.
Team Murray, which consisted of the captain plus Ray Romano, Alfonso Ribeiro and Clay Walker, put the victory away early by winning the first three holes at Pebble, before Eastwood’s side, which also included Kira K. Dixon, Josh Duhamel and Kyle Rudolph, took the last two at the iconic 17th and 18th holes.
“There’ll be an afterglow of course first, a championship afterglow, so you know when you touch the stars,” Murray (pictured) quipped after raising the Eastwood-Murray Cup.
Murray (Save One Life Inc.) and Ribeiro (Fresh Start Surgical Gifts) each earned $20,000 for their designated charities by winning the first and third holes, while Romano (Harvest Home) and Walker (Band Against MS) made $10,000 each for winning the third hole.
Eastwood (SPCA Monterey County) and Dixon (Children Miracle Network Hospitals) each raised $10,000 for winning the fourth hole, while Rudolph (African Community & Conservation Foundation) and Duhamel (End Zone at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital) each earned $10,000 for winning the last hole.
In addition, Madison Vernon of Carmel High and Rachel Roberts of Salinas High each received $3,500 for their college education from Denise Rutherford, 3M Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs.
Also, Carmel High and Salinas High each will receive a $9,000 college scholarship from 3M to be used at the school’s discretion for other college-bound seniors.
The 3M Celebrity Challenge is played in the alternate-shot format the day before the start of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
