Team California wins PGA Jr. Title

Team California claimed the 2014 PGA Junior League Golf Championship with a 7-5 victory over Team Georgia at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., in the title match.

The California team, which represented San Ramon Golf Club, met defending champion Georgia in the final for the third consecutive year, with another California team claiming the title in 2012.

“I am overjoyed right now and it’s been an incredible ride,” said Captain Jim Collins, a PGA pro who guided the California team. “I am so proud of my team and to win a national championship really puts an exclamation point on my career.

Added 13-year-old Aaron Chen, a Team California member: “The (final) match was neck-and-neck all day, and it feels so good to win. This is my best experience in a team sport. It’s actually the highlight of my golf career so far.”

Other members of the San Ramon team were Andrew Bagasbas, Jack Gardner, Brendan Hy, Brian Ma, Mackade Mangels, Sebastian Iqbal, Danielle Suh, Yealimi Noh and Sabrina Iqbal.

Team Indiana finished third by beating Tennessee, 8-4, Connecticut was fourth after defeating Texas, 8-4, and Iowa and New Jersey shared seventh following a 6-6 tie.
