Asterisk Talley went all the way across the country to become a national champion.
Talley, from Chowchilla, defeated Yana Wilson of Henderson, Nev., by two strokes to capture the 2023 Rolex Girls Junior Championship at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek in John’s Island, S.C.
“I never thought that I could win something like this,” said Talley, who won the 2023 Se Ri Pak Desert Junior in her last start. “But leading up to Rolex Girls, I have been playing well and it gave me the confidence to compete at this high-caliber level.”
The 14-year-old Talley, a 2022 Rolex Junior All-American, made five birdies in the final round in posting a score of 72-70-70—69—281, seven-under-par, while Wilson wound up at 78-67-67-71—283, followed by Irene Kim of Woodstock, Md., at 74-69-67-74—284, and Alisa Inprasit of Thailand at 72-72-76-68—288.
Megan Meng of Pennington, N.J. totaled 70-69-75-75—289 to tie for fifth with Anna Huang of Coto de Caza, who wound up at 76-71-567-75—289, while Kylie Chong of Torrance was seventh at 72-70-74-74—290.
Chloe Kovelesky of Boca Raton, Fla., shot 72-70-74-74—290 to tie for eighth with Scarlett Schremmer of Birmingham, Ala, who finished at 75-72-72-72—291, and Alice Zihi Zhao of Irvine, who came in at 79-70-71-71—291. | ||||||||||
