Brett Stegmaier was 11-under-par for the tournament after 15 holes of the second round and held a one-stroke lead over Chad Campbell, Tyler Aldridge and Morgan Hoffman when darkness halted play in the second round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
The 32-year-old Stegmaier, who has never won as a pro, was 6-under for the round including a 34-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole after starting at No. 10, and will resume play in the morning with a 14-foot birdie putt on the seventh hole after opening with a 66.
“(The putt) was kind of downhill and the greens were bumpy,” said Stegmaier, who earned his PGA Tour card by finishing ninth in the Web.com Tour Finals earlier this month. “They’ll be better in the morning. It was a no-brainer (to wait until the morning).
“A month ago I wasn’t even guaranteed Web.com status for next year. Just kind of turned it on at the end of the year, figured a couple things out.”
Campbell, a four-time PGA Tour winner who played at UNLV, followed a 65 with a 67 that included his only bogey on the 18th hole, while Hoffman carded a second straight 66 and Aldridge birdied three of the last four holes to wrap up a 68 after opening with 64.
Cameron Tringale of Laguna Niguel sank a six-foot eagle putt on the last hole to complete a 65 and was two strokes back in a tie for fifth with Nick Watney (66) of Davis and Fresno State, Brendon de Jonge (66) of Zimbabwe, Daniel Summerhays (65), Jimmy Walker (67) and first-round co leader Mark Hubbard of San Jose State, who was 2-under for the round after 16 holes following an opening 64.
Kevin Na (66) of Diamond Bar was in a tie for 11th, Patrick Rodgers (71) of Stanford and Ricky Barnes (71) of Stockton were in a tie for 22nd and Rickie Fowler (65) of Murrieta, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 5 in the world, was tied for 27th.
