Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., who played at Stanford, closed with a bogey-free, 7-under-par 65 to capture the Korn Ferry Tour Championship by one stroke over Greyson Sigg at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind.
Wu, who started the final round five strokes behind third-round leader Sigg, scrambled for a par after missing the final green with a chip shot to within two feet, after Sigg made a double-bogey 6 behind him on the 14th hole and could not recover.
“It’s almost surreal,” said Wu, who helped Stanford win the 2019 NCAA Championship. “I mean, I think just over a month and a half ago I was still playing Monday qualifiers and just hoping to get kind of a schedule going.
“Yeah, standing here I think six, seven weeks later, winner of the Tour Championship, it’s just an awesome feeling and quite surreal.”
The 23-year-old Wu, who won the 2017 Porter Cup and was stroke-play medalist at the 2019 U.S. Amateur, birdied two of the first four holes in the final round, added two more on Nos. 7 and 8, another on the 10th hole and two more in a row on the 14th and 15th holes.
Wu, who earned a spot in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., in two weeks, finished with a score of 67-69-69-65—270, 18-under.
“I didn’t ask about scores until after hitting my second shot on 18,” said Wu, whose best previous finish was a tie for second two weeks earlier in the Albertsons Boise Open. “I asked my caddie if I had to chip it in from just short of the green. He’s like, ‘Nope, you actually have a one‑shot lead and a four would go a long way here.’
“I knew I was playing well today, but I had no idea what other people were doing. I just tried to stick to my game plan and play well, finish hard and then hopefully come out on top.”
Sigg finished second at 65-69-66-71—271, while Dan McCarthy shot 69-67-65-71—272 to tie for third with Vince India, who finished at 70-64-70-68—272, and Seth Reeves, who wound up at 65-69-68-70—272.
David Lipsky of Los Angeles posted a score of 69-70-64-70—273 to tie for sixth with Max Greyserman, who shot 70-67-67-69—273, and Dawie van der Walt of South Africa, who totaled 64-71-67-71—273.
Zecheng Dou of China finished at 71-71-67-65—274 to tie for ninth with Taylor Pendrith of Canada, who came in at 68-71-69-66—274.
