Stanford women win NCAA Albuquerque Regional

Albane Valenzuela of Stanford captured the individual title and led the top-ranked Cardinal to victory in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional by seven strokes over Duke on the University of New Mexico South Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Stanford, which tied for Regional titles in 2007 and 2016, claimed its school-record fifth victory of the season with a score of 290-283-293–866, 2-over-par, followed by Duke at 297-288-288–873, Pepperdine at 287-290-302–879 and USC at 296-285-303–884.

California posted a score of 295-291–302–888 to tie for fifth with Miami (Fla.), which finished at 303-288-297–888.

The top six teams advanced to the NCAA Championships on May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Stanford claimed the NCAA title in 2015 and finished second to Washington last year.

Sacramento State tied for 15th at 310-298-303–911, while Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was 16th at 308-312–315–935.

Valenzuela, a freshman from Switzerland who was sidelined for part of the season because of an injury, claimed her first college victory with a score of 71-69-70–210, 6-under, while Tatiana Wijaya of Pepperdine shot 70-72-71–213 to tie for second with

Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton, who totaled 73-68-72–213.

Ana Belac of Duke carded a score of 73-71-70–214 to tie for fourth with Bianca Pagdanganan of Gonzaga, who wound up at 73-69-72–214, and Leona Maguire of Duke shot 75-71-71–217 to tie for sixth with Victoria Morgan of USC, who finished at 72-71-74–217.

Andrea Lee of Stanford recorded a score of 75-70-73–218 to tie for eighth with Nadine White of Campbell, who totaled 73-73-72–218, and Renate Grimstad of Miami, who came in at 73-72-73–218.

Marthe Wold led California in a tie for 11th at 72-71-76–219, Momoka Kobori of Pepperdine tied for 14th at 73-72-75–220, Nishtha Madan of Sacramento State tied for 27th at 77-72-75–224, Paige Lee of UC Davis tied for 38th at 77-75-74–226, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir of Fresno State tied for 49th at 73-75-80–228, Kristin Le of Santa Clara tied for 57th at 80-72-77–229 and Jamie Binns of Cal Poly (SLO) tied for 66th at 77-74-79–230.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Stanford were Casey Danielson, who shot 72-73-74–219 to tie for 11th with teammate Shannon Aubert, who finished at 72-71-76–219, and Sierra Kersten tied for 66th at 78-76-77–231.
