Stanford Claims 9th NCAA Men’s Title

Stanford couldn’t stay with Texas three times in tournaments during the regular season, but the Cardinal claimed its ninth national title by beating the Longhorns, 3-2, in the match-play final of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at Blessings Golf Club https://arkansasrazorback.comthe-blessings-golf-club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Coach Conrad Ray’s team won its last five events of the season.

“We got the momentum going early in the spring and just rode the momentum,” Ray said after Stanford claimed its ninth national title, the first since 2007 and second under Ray. “I’m really proud of my guys and we’re super excited to win the whole thing.

“We had great senior leadership and good enthusiasm from our younger players, and it was a great recipe. … It’s been a team effort.”

Henry Shimp gave the Cardinal its winning point with a 2-and-1 victory over Spencer Soosman of Texas.

Stanford senior Isaiah Salinda capped a 3-0 record in match play during the NCAA tournament by dealing Texas freshman Cole Hammer his first defeat, 4 and 3, and Brandon Wu put the Cardinal on the brink of the title by beating Pierceson Coody, 4 and 3.

Freshman Parker Coody gave Texas the first point of the match with a 6-and-5 trouncing of Daulet Tuleubayev, another freshman who was the hero in Stanford’s semifinal victory over Vanderbilt.

Steven Chervony was leading David Snyder, who gave Stanford the winning point in a quarterfinal victory over Wake Forest, 1 up, and that match was conceded since the national championship had been decided.
