Jordan Spieth, who capped a brilliant season by winning to Tour Championship on Sunday to capture the FedEx Cup, became the second-youngest golfer to claim the PGA of America’s Player of the Year Award and Vardon Trophy.
The season-ending awards are presented by the PGA of America for excellence on the PGA Tour.
Tiger Woods was 21-years-old in 1997 when he earned the first of his 11 PGA Player of the Year Awards and nine Vardon Trophies.
Spieth, 22, won the Masters and the U.S. Open this year, making a strong run at the Grand Slam by tying for fourth in the Open Championship and finishing second in the PGA Championship.
In addition, he captured the Valspar Championship and the John Deere Classic, giving him five victories this season, and he finished in the top 10 on 15 occasions.
Spieth collected 180 Player of the Year points, based upon 90 points for his five victories; 50 bonus points for earning two major championships, 20 points for leading the money list and 20 points for winning the Vardon Trophy.
Day, who also won five times including the PGA Championship, was runner-up in the Player of the Year standings with 106 points; followed by Bubba Watson with 52, Open Champion Zach Johnson with 46 and Rickie Fowler, the Players champion, with 44.
Spieth claimed the Vardon Trophy for low adjusted scoring average of 68.911 in 91 complete rounds, edging Jason Day of Australia, who played 75 rounds in an average of 69.161.
The PGA of America has awarded the Vardon Trophy, named for British great Harry Vardon, since 1937, while the PGA Player of the Year Award dates to 1948.
Spieth, Day, Fowler and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland have been nominated as finalists for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award.
Daniel Berger, Tony Finau, Nick Taylor and Justin Thomas have been nominated for the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Award.
The winners of the PGA Tour awards will be announced on Friday.
