Soosman beats Wolff on 20th hole

Spencer Soosman of Westlake Village beat Matthew Wolff of Agoura Hills, his teammate at Westlake High, on the 20th hole to win the 37th Polo Golf Junior Classic on the Champion Course at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Sierra Brooks of Sorrento, Fla., beat Lauren Stephenson of Lexington, S.C., 4 and 3, in the Girls Division final.

“It means a lot to get this win,” said Soosman, a junior at Westlake who claimed his third AJGA victory of the season. “This week was my first time ever playing match play in competition and it’s a lot of golf. This just feels amazing.

” … Matt is so talented and his time is going to come. Whatever happens, we’re still going to be best friends. I got to play in the finals match with my best friend, who else ever gets to say that?”

Wolff rolled to a 3-up lead through five holes, but Soosman won the eighth and ninth before getting even with a birdie at No. 15. After Wolff regained the lead by winning the 17th, Soosman forced extra holes by sinking a three-foot birdie putt following a clutch bunker shot.

Soosman won with a par on the second playoff hole.

Brooks, who has committed to Florida, never trailed in claiming her fourth AJGA victory.

Former winners of the Polo Junior Golf Classic include Tiger Woods (1991), Stewart Cink (1989), Trevor Immelman (1995), Paula Creamer (2002), Grace Park (1994, 1996) and Morgan Pressel (2004).
