Brandt Snedeker made it bookend titles in the Wyndham Championship.
The 37-year-old Snedeker claimed his ninth PGA Tour victory, closing with a 3-under-par 67 to win by three strokes over C.T. Pan of Taiwan and Webb Simpson at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., where he took his first title in 2007.
“It means a lot to win here again because Wyndham was my first corporate sponsor, and it says something that they believed in a 27-year-old kid,” said Snedeker, the 2012 FedEx Cup champion who is looking forward to the start of the playoffs this week. “So it’s emotional after opening with a 59, and to have my family here to share in it.
“I’ve won the FedEx Cup before and I’m excited to start the playoffs. I’ve been playing well and I’m the kind of player who can get on a hot streak and keep it going. This is the right time of year for that.”
Sneds, who led most of the way after starting his 59 with a bogey, sank a 19-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish at 21-under 259.
Pan, 26, whose only pro victories came on the PGA Tour Canada in 2015, was tied for the lead with Snedeker until hitting his tee shot out of bounds on the final hole to close out a 66 with a double-bogey 6.
“I had some noise in my head on that last tee shot and should have stepped back and regrouped,” said Pan, who won two NCAA Regional titles while playing for the Washington Huskies. “It was just one bad shot.
“But I played well and this was a learning experience.”
Simpson, the 2011 Wyndham champion who lives under two hours from Sedgefield, holed an 18-foot eagle putt at No. 5 and added seven birdies before making his only bogey at No. 18 to finish at 62.
Jim Furyk, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain, shot 63 to wind up four shots back in a tie for fourth with D.A. Points, who highlighted his 67 with a hole-out eagle-2 from 152 yards on the second hole.
Ryan Moore totaled 67 to finish one more down in a tie for sixth with Brian Gay, who had a 69, while Nick Taylor of Canada made a 12-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to highlight a 63 and wind up six behind in a tie for eighth with Ryan Armour, who had a 65, and David Hearn of Canada, who came in with a 67 that included a nine-foot eagle putt at No. 15.
Defending champion Henrik Stenson of Sweden closed with a 64 that included a 15-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole.
