Brian Smock of Coronado Golf Club collected 10 birdies in the final round and added three more in as many playoff holes to win the Southern California PGA Stroke Play Classic at Andalusia Country Club in La Quinta.
Smock, who won the SCPGA Chapter Challenge in January, birdied the last five holes of regulation to post a score of 69-65—134, while Steve Saunders of Temecula Creek Golf Club in Temecula finished with three straight birdies for a score of 66-68—134 and matched Smock with birdies on the first two extra holes before coming up short.
Smock collected $1,500, while Saunders took home $1,250.
Kyle Mendoza of South Hills County Club in West Covina was third at 69-67—136, while Kyle Kelly of Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage shot 68-69—137 to tie for fourth with Alan Scheer of Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul, who finished at 69-68—137.
Michael Block of Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, who has won the title three times, totaled 72-68—138 to tie for sixth with defending champion Kenny Pigman of Goose Green Golf Club in Jurupa Valley, who wound up at 71-67—138, Chris Lungo of Arroyo Trabuco, who finished at 69-69—138, and Jeff Hart of Solana Beach, who came in at 66-72, while Brant Smith of Ivey Ranch Country Club in Thousand Palms was 10th at 72-67—139.
