Schauffele gets Farmers Invite

Xander Schauffele of San Diego is one of six players to receive sponsors exemptions into the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla on Feb. 28-31, 2016.

The 22-year-old Schauffele (pictured), an All-American last season at San Diego State who captured the 2014 California Amateur Championship, will be playing in his hometown event on the PGA Tour.

A graduate of Scripps Ranch High in San Diego, Schauffele earned full status on the Web.com Tour for 2016 by tying for 45th in the Web.com Tour final qualifying tournament after tying for second in the first stage of qualifying and claiming medalist honors in the first stage.

Other sponsors exemptions went to Anirban Lahiri of India, Robert Garrigus, Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela, Aaron Baddeley of Australia and Ollie Schneiderjans.

Lahiri won twice on the European Tour last season, tied for fifth in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and played for the International Team in the Presidents Cup.

Garrigus, whose only PGA Tour victory came in the 2010 Children’s Miracle Network Classic, will be playing in the Torrey Pines event for the 11th consecutive year.

Vegas, who won the 2011 Bob Hope Classic, tied for third in the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open and tied for 11th at Torrey Pines last year, holding the lead until carding a double bogey on the 11th hole of the final round.

Baddeley, who has won three times on the PGA Tour but not since the 2011 Northern Trust Open at Riviera, will be making his 13th appearance at Torrey Pines.

Schneiderjans, who earned the 2014 Mark McCormack Medal as the No. 1 amateur in the world, last year became the third amateur since 1960 to make the cut in the U.S. Open and the Open Championship in the same year, joining Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. He was a two-time All-American at Georgia Tech.
