The Southern California Golf Association, which lost the biennial California Amateur Cup Championship the last four times it was played, led virtually all the way this time while claiming a 48½-41½ victory over the Northern California Golf Association at Rancho La Quinta Country Club https://www.rancholaquinta.com in La Quinta.
The NCGA still leads the competition, formerly known as the Seaver Cup, 5-4-2.
The event originally was named for Charlie Seaver, who held the NCGA, SCGA and California Amateur titles at the same time in 1933-34.
The SCGA led virtually all the way, taking a 16½-13½ lead in Round 1 four-ball matches. Kathy Kurata/Caryn Wilson and Jakeishya Le/Erica Wang combined to record five points in their four-ball matches, and later Nick Geyer/Stewart Hagestad cashed in three full points,
The NCGA needed a huge comeback in singles on the second and final day, but the SCGA rolled to the title by claiming a 32-28 margin in the head-to-head matches that closed out the tournament.
The California Cup utilizes a format in which three points are available for each match, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match. Any matches that are halved earn half a point.
Playing for the winning SCPGA side were Kurata, Wilson, Ye, Wang, Geyer, Hagestad, Jakeishya Le, Tim Hogarth, Stephen Hale, Whitney French, Gina Bamberger, John Mack, Don Dubois, Cody Hall, Damon Krause, Jamie Hoffmann, Dan Sullivan, Corey Weworski, Craig Davis, Jim Ream and Corby Segal.
On the NCGA team were Holly Bare, Eva Monisteri, Domingo Jojola, Ian Dahl, Lynne Cowan, Karen Garcia, Jeff Britton, Mike Rowley, Bobby Bucey, Jason Melvin, Joy Robinson, Patricia Cornett, Jason Anthony, Garett Wagner, Tina Barker, Marianne Towersey, Casey Boyns, Jim Knoll, Brett Viboch and Matt Cohn.
