Scavo birdies 18, wins 88th Trans National

Kathleen Scavo of Benicia made a birdie on the final hole to win the 88th Women’s Trans National Amateur Championship by one stroke over Ziyi Wang of China at Peachtree Golf and Country Club in Marysville.

Scavo, a senior at Oregon, posted a score of 68-72-70-70—280, 8-under-par, while Wang, who plays at Stanford and also closed with a birdie, finished at 69-73-68-71—281, and Emilee Hoffman of Folsom and the University of Texas, who won the Women’s Western Amateur earlier this summer, was third at 71-74-70-67—282.

Clare Legaspi of the Phillippines and UCLA shot 72-69-72-71—284 to tie for fourth with Amy Matsuoka of Newport Beach and Oregon, who finished at 71-75-67-71—284, while

Samantha Hutchison of San Jose and UC Davis totaled 70-74-69-73—286 to tie for sixth with Katherine Zhu of Canada and Cal, who wound up at 71-70-73-72—286.

Kate Smith of Detroit Lakes of Nebraska finished at 74-73-66-74—287 to tie for eighth with Abegail Arevalo of the Philippines and San Jose State, who totaled 74-69-72-72—287, and Rino Sasaki of Japan and Washington, who came in at 71-68-74-74—287.

Previous winners of the tournament include Betty Jameson, Patty Berg, Babe Zaharias, Jo Ann Gunderson Carner, Nancy Lopez, Betsy Rawls, Sandra Haynie, Carole Semple Thompson, Brittany Lang, Vickie Goetze, Virada Nirapathpongporn, Grace Park, Ellen Port, Pearl Sinn, Jane Bastanchury Booth and her daughter, Kellee Booth.
