Santa Margarita High Claims Second Straight CIF State Girls Championship

Santa Margarita High simply kept winning until the very end.

The Eagles won a tiebreaker over five-time champion Torrey Pines High to capture the 2023 California Interscholastic Federation’s State Girls High School Golf Championship for the second straight season at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Santa Margarita, a Catholic school in Rancho Santa Margarita, won all four of its postseason tournaments and was victorious in the tiebreaker, which counts the score its sixth player. Sophomore Veronica Man finished at eight-over-par 79, while Alice Koontz of Torrey Pines wound up at 88.  

The Eagles earlier won the Southern Section  Division I Championship, the CIF Southern California Golf Association Qualifier and the CIF SoCal Regional, after also claiming the Trinity League Championship.

Rancho Santa Margarita became the first Orange County to claim back-to-back titles in the State Championship by posting a score of 11-over-par 366, which was equaled by Torrey Pines.

Walnut High posted a score of 26-over-par 381 to finish third, followed by Granite Bay High at 33-over 388, Oak Ridge High of El Dorado Hills at 40-over 395, and The Harker School of San Jose at 73-over 428.

Sophomore Zoe Jiamanukoonkit of Torrey Pines captured the individual title with a score of 5-under-par 66, while Anna Song of Palisades High was second at 69, followed by Kacey Lee of Temple City High at 70, and they were the only players in the field to break par.

Vivi Yen of Walnut High shot 71 to tie for fourth with Asterisk Talley of Chowchilla High, Sehee Sim of Torrey Pines, Donina Zhou of Rancho Santa Margarita and Kalla Elsayegh of The Marlborough School in Los Angeles.

Leigh Chen of Rancho Santa Margarita totaled 72 to finished in a big tie for ninth that included Eagles teammate Taryn Cagle, Chloee Chang of Walnut, Emily Guan of Oak Ridge in El Dorado Hills, Juliet Oh of Diamond Bar High, Joyce Zhang of Valley Christian High in San Jose and Emily Luo of Monte Vista High in Danville.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Rancho Santa Margarita were Angelina Tao in a tie for 23rd at 75, Emily Song in a tie for 27th at 76, and Man in a tie for 39th with her tournament-winner 79.
