San Jose State’s Yu Earns Genesis Exemption

Sean Yu of San Jose State shot 1-under-par 70 to win the sixth annual Collegiate Showcase Invitational by two strokes at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades and earn an exemption into the 2020 Genesis Invitational, which starts Thursday.

Yu, a senior from Taiwan who graduated from Arrowhead Christian Academy in Redlands, will be playing in his first professional event.

“To be honest, I didn’t think that I’d ever get to where I am today,” said Yu, who captured the 2016 Santa Clara County Amateur and the 2018 Nevada Match Play. “It’s definitely a dream come true to play in a Tour event and to play at Riviera Country Club.”

Allen Hamilton of Kentucky totaled 72 to tie for second with Spencer Soosman of Texas, while Washington teammates Jan Schneider and Noah Woolsey tied for fourth at 73.

Among the others in the field from California schools, Yuxin Lin of USC tied for sixth at 75, Josh McCarthy of Pepperdine was eighth at 76 and Clay Feagler of Pepperdine was 12th at 83.

Past winners of the Collegiate Showcase include Lukas Euler of Kentucky) in 2019, Scottie Scheffler of Texas in 2018, Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine in 2017, Charlie Danielson of Illinois in 2016 and Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest in 2015.
