San Diego Amateurs Defeat Pros, 17-6, in the San Diego Cup at Vista Valley CC

The San Diego County Amateur Team defeated the Professional Team, 17-6, in the annual San Diego Cup, a Ryder Cup-type competition, at Vista Valley Country Club in Vista.

Amateur Joe Ryon of Isla Vista, a member at Vista Valley Country Club, led the scoring for the Amateurs with three points on his home course.

“The matches were very competitive, more than the final score indicated,” Amateur Team Captain Joe Wagner of Encinitas said. “At one point today, we were down in eight matches. The Amateurs played great and really turned it on each day on the back nine.

“On the first day, Craig Davis (of Chula Vista) and Aaron Goldberg (of Encinitas) birdied the last five holes to come back and win in the Pinehurst format, which was amazing.”

The Amateurs won the better -ball competition on the second day, 4-2, winning three of the six matches and tying two of them. Mark Geddes of Coronado Golf Course, who wound up with three points to lead the Pros, and Tim Parun of Sail Ho Golf Club in San Diego secured the lone point for the Professionals.

The Amateurs entered the singles matches on Sunday with a 9-3 lead and didn’t let up, claiming an 8-3 margin in the singles by winning seven of the matches and tying two of them to close out of victory.

On the first day in the alternate shot format, the Amateurs defeated the Pros, 5-1, with Geddes and Michael Griffin of the Santaluz Club in San Diego claiming the only point for the Professionals.

The San Diego Cup matches are an annual team event between the top 12 non-college Amateurs players and the top 12 PGA Professionals in San Diego County.
