Isaiah Salinda of South San Francisco made a bogey on the final hole, but held on to win the 52nd Pacific Coast Amateur Championship by one stroke over Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Okla., on the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Salinda, a senior at Stanford out of Serra High in San Mateo, posted a score of 71-67-62-72—272, 12-under-par, tying the course record in the third round, while Eckroat, who plays at Oklahoma State, finished second at 65-67-71-70—273, followed by Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Stanford at 67-68-70-70—275 and William Gordon of Davidson, N.C., at 67-69-69-71—276.
“It feels awesome,” said Salinda, who also captured the 2017 Northern California Amateur Championship and the 2016 San Jose City Championship. “It still hasn’t quite sunk in yet. … It was really close all day and I was just trying to hold on and I just barely did. I’m pretty stoked.
“I had a pretty good idea (of where I stood on 16.) I asked my caddy if anyone in front of us took it low or if I needed to do something special or if it was just between me and the other two guys in my group. The birdie on 16 was pretty big.”
Collin Morikawa of La Canada Flintridge and Cal shot 72-69-69-68—278 to tie for fifth with Braden Thornberry of Olive Branch, Miss., the 2017 NCAA champion, who totaled 71-69-68-70—278, while Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., finished at 72-72-69-66—279 to tie for seventh with Denzel Ieremia of Ames, Iowa, who wound up at 71-68-69-71—279.
Hide Yoshihara of Irvine and UCLA shot 72-69-69-70—280 to tie for ninth with Cole Madey of West Linn, Ore., who finished at 69-70-69-72—280, and Eric Ansett of Spokane, Wash., who came in at 68-72-69-71—280.
