Pomona-Pitzer Women Beat Carnegie-Mellon by 19 Shots in Golfweek Classic

Pomona-Pitzer’s Women’s Golf Team capped a brilliant Fall Season with what Coach John Wurtzer called the greatest regular-season victory in program history.

The Sagehens led virtually from wire-to-wire to defeat Carnegie-Mellon, which beat Pomona-Pitzer two weeks earlier in the Fall Preview, by 19 strokes in the Golfweek October Classic at Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.

“The first day, they were nine-under par on the par-5s holes,” said Wurzer, who is in his sixth season as head coach of the Sagehens. “It was, for us, a really amazing performance on those holes and it really kind of separated us the first day. For us, it was really about getting competition. We wanted to come to this event because it was really one of the two best regular-season events in the country — in the Fall for sure.

“We’ve just built toward rising to the level of competition that’s in our conference and they set the bar, and we’ve just tried to kind of reach it and surpass it. Wins like this just show that we have players who have bought in and they’re exceptionally talented. The teams in our conference have pushed us to be great because the only way we accomplish goals that we set is to beat them, first and foremost.”

Pomona-Pitzer, which captured the CA State Intercollegiate and finished second in the Williams Invitational and the Fall Preview earlier in the season, posted a winning score of 286-297-296—879, 15-over-par, while Carnegie Mellon was second at 309-296-293—898, followed by Emory University at 302-309-297—908, Illinois Wesleyan at 304-307-299—910 and Centre College at 309-300-302—911.
