Kenny Pigman didn’t mind someone asking if he was in “Hog Heaven.”
Pigman had just holed a 30-foot birdie put on the last hole to wrap up a four-stroke victory over Stephen Delmar of Rockville, Md., in the 42nd National Car Rental PGA Assistant Professional Championship on the Wannamaker Course at PGA National Golf Club http://www.pgaresort.com in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
“That’s fine, I get a lot of pig stuff,” said Pigman, who lives in Norco and is a PGA Assistant Professional at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma. “I got the logo going on everything.
“I don’t think I had a three-putt all week, which is surprising. I started strong and hihirtt well today. I didn’t plan on making that putt on 18, but it helps. My Grandma, Shirley (Pigman, 83), who started me in golf, says, ‘Keep making birdies! Keep making birdies!’”
The 30-year-old Pigman, who wears a logo of a happy pig with the initials “KP” on his shirt, hat and golf bag, has won the Southern California PGA Assistant Championship three times, and joined Loren Roberts (1979) and Jon Fiedler (1985) as the only Californians to claim the national title.
Pigman, who collected seven of his 23 birdies in the final round, posted a score of 66-72-69-66—273, 15-under-par, while Delmar was second at 68-68-73-68—277, followed by Joshua Rackley of Brookville, N.Y., at 68-74-69-67—278.
Dan Olsen of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., shot 76-72-66-67—281 to tie for fourth with Brian Maurer of Richmond, Ind., who finished at 71-72-70-68—281.
Scott Cherry of Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage totaled 72-68-70-73—283, to finish in a tie for sixth with J.P. Griffin (71-69-73-70—283) of Sugar Hill, Ga.; Andy Mickelson (69-72-70-72—283) of Lockport, Ill.; Colin Van Es (68-73-70-72—283) of Davenport, Fla., and Lee Whitehead (70-72-69-72—283) of Knoxville, Tenn.
